Bioremediation
Human advances in the application of technology unfortunately often also create environmental problems. Human impact on the fragile biosphere has become a topic of intense global concern. Purdue researchers seek novel and economical means of repairing our environment. One approach is the study of naturally-occurring microbes, such as those in waste sites or bioreactors. These microbes have evolved mechanisms to remediate a broad variety of wastes. A second is the directed formation of custom-designed enzymes that have acquired the ability to degrade toxins such as PCBs.
