TOEFL
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score is required if the applicant’s native language is not English. The minimum score required by the Department of Biological Sciences for the TOEFL is higher than that required by the Graduate School.
Paper-based test: 600 Computer-based test: 250
Internet-based test: Overall Total Score: 80
With the following minimum section requirements:
Reading: 19 Listening: 16
Speaking: 22 Writing: 18Note that in addition to required minimum scores for writing, speaking, listening, and reading, the Department of Biological Sciences also requires a minimum overall score that is higher than the minimums for the four area tests combined. Applicants must meet or exceed each of the five scores (listed above) for admission to our graduate program.
This department does NOT require a GRE Subject Test or the GRE Written Assessment Test. However, scores MUST BE SENT DIRECTLY to us (Purdue University) from ETS. Copies are not considered official.

The Test of Spoken English (TSE) is NOT required, but HIGHLY RECOMMENED for the applicant whose native language is not English and whose medium of instruction was not in English. The minimum acceptable score of 50 is required for a Teaching Assistantship to be awarded. However, a position in our graduate program is NOT guaranteed even if the TSE is taken and a minimum score of 50 or better is received.
